Trouble with Personal Narrative
I cannot believe that I was able to attend class with a workable draft of my personal narrative in my hot little hands. I am glad that the draft did not embarrass me too much! As for the dynamics of my assigned draft reading group, I am pleased with Beth and Lori as my partners; truth and respect are significant elements that should always be coupled, and my partners allowed for personal commentary, empathy, and useful criticisms. In my classroom, I attempt to make it possible for all students to be respected, but it is a difficult objective. I was thrilled to hear both Don and Sherrie say that students need to read aloud their work; I always stress that to my students! Some still believe that I am crazy, though.

Have we learned to trust faster because it is a short course? It takes some kids forever to feel comfortable enough to share a sentence; let alone a lifetime.
ReplyDeleteGreat question Kaye. Maybe. I think that we have been involved in an atmosphere of trust from the first day we meet others at the interviews. The pre-institute day also laid a wonderful foundation from which we've been consistently building.
ReplyDeleteAs far as reading aloud and revision, when I am feeling as if I'm just about finished with a writing piece, I read it backwards - from the last word to the first word. It may seems silly, but as I believe Don mentioned, our eyes tend to skim over words that may have been missed, etc.
