This morning, we did a round robin about the one thing that stood out most from our first week together. Most of us selected something about the amount of time we spend teacher "grammar" as it's own block of instruction and what a waste of time it can be. I was happy to see that I wasn't the only one.
My 8th graders come to me after having a teacher who LOVES grammar....kind of the way I love really cheesy pizza...when they get to my class they are almost appalled that I don't spend any time dissecting and diagramming sentences. Once we start reading (only the good stuff!) and writing (only the good stuff there as well!), it becomes clear that they were missing out a bit after all those years of drills. They begin to really begin to play with the language (which in my mind is what it's all about anyway!).
ReplyDeleteScary that a lot of us had that as our learning moment. It was mine too. Hopefully, now we can fix it.
ReplyDeleteI pass out a "grammar" text at the beginning of each semester because it is expected. I tell the students this is a resource. We will not be doing assignments from it but use it in our writings as a point of reference. I don't think I will even hand them out this year but place them beside the dictionary and thesaurus.
ReplyDeleteKaye: we also have a grammar text, and I stick them on the shelf by the dictionaries as well! :) Go for it!!
ReplyDeleteKaye, I didn't pass out any of my text books last year. If I hadn't decided to participate in this project, I was going to write my own text.
