I was thinking today about the absence of music in my classroom. It is something that I don't often include, but know that I should. I believe that this year, during some journaling exercises, I will invite students to play their instruments softly and quietly while we write. If it works fine, if it doesn't, fine. Students playing need not complete the writing exercise. I'm thinking instrumentals only, recordings are fine.
I have used music a lot in the past mainly because my students are familiar with only a few types: country, rap, rock. I introduce jazz, blues, musicals, classical, whatever. It's amazing how little they've been exposed to and how much they like the other types.
ReplyDeleteI agree. It needs not be part of the actual exercise. Offer opportunities!
ReplyDeleteI have used music in the past with 5th grade but I got away from it in Middle & High School grades. I think its time to bring it back!
ReplyDeleteI use classical music; sometimes the weather sets the mood but I use the Romantic Age frequently. Juniors always complain at the beginning of the year to put on something else; Seniors tell them I won't. If I forget, though, they remind me by saying it is so quiet. Where's the music! I love teens!
ReplyDeleteI know that music is so important in setting the mood and atmosphere of the classroom. My fourth graders often asked for music. I know it works with Kindergarten and Preschoolers. I'm looking forward to bringing music with me to the second grade. Thanks for the good demo, Laurie!
