River Between Us

I had to finish the book. I did not see the end until it was in front of me. Oh the paths we traverse alone and together. I see so, so many possibilities: reading circles; independent research. THOMAS JEFFERSON'S CHILDREN could be used. The author talks about all the research required to write the book. I love that part because I think it is important to make clear that historical fiction has real history in it. You can do your own further research! Oh the places we can go with this. I am writing my requisition order this weekend!

  1. CION has revisited me often since I was first introduced to it. I hear it just as Toloki hears his master call. A young Athens teen was recently stabbed at a party in Belpre where a significant amount of alcohol was provided to underage people. He has just graduated:football hero, honor student. On a recent trip with my cousin-in-law, who grew up in this part of the world, we were discussing the events. Her niece attended the party and reported to us before the news came out. My cousin said--His mother is a Tabor. Eight weeks ago I may would have let the comment go because I the word Tabor was of no significance to me. She told me a little of the family. I read with awe (Ruth's voice in my head) the comments the father made about the circumstances of his son's death. So matter of fact. Nothing accusatory; that's just life. I thought back to when my son was killed. First, I don't think I could comment to the news---I had though; and secondly, I don't think I could have been so forgiving. I know (and was) more accusing in my statements. I have rolled this over and over. Every evening the long drive gives me way too much alone time to ponder---no paper to make notes. I pass the exit to Stewart not once but twice on my commute. It teases me to follow it. To come see where this seed has been planted. I have some unfinished business. What if gnaws at me. Where did my grandmother come from? Who are her people (and mine)? This class is causing me to think way tot much. I feel as if I am running out of time. But then again, I have felt this way for many years.

  2. Wow. That is what I have to say about the substance of your comment. Wow.

A thought though about ideas while driving--a small hand held voice activated recorder?

  4. I wondered if anyone had thought about using the book Cold Mountain. I read it and thought it was quite good and historically accurate. There's always the movie too!
